Case Study: Publix Atlanta Fresh Kitchen

Scope Of Work
Martin Concrete was responsible for several key concrete tasks on the Atlanta Fresh Kitchen project:
- Concrete Paving: 348,000 square feet of 8” thick concrete paving was poured to create durable surfaces capable of withstanding heavy operational traffic.
- Stem Walls: Stem walls were poured beneath insulated metal panels (IMP).
- Slab on Grade (SOG): A total of 139,590 square feet of Slab on Grade (SOG) was poured throughout the main area of the facility
- Cold Storage and Freezer Zones: Martin Concrete also placed 3” mud slabs and freezer topping slabs in the facility’s cold storage and freezer areas.
- MEP Pads: Concrete pads, ranging from 4” to 6” thick, were poured to support mechanical machinery that would be placed in the area.
- Cast-in-Place (CIP) Piers: Martin Concrete poured 76 CIP piers
Challenges and Solutions:
The construction of the Atlanta Fresh Kitchen project presented several unique challenges that required creative solutions from Martin Concrete.
- Confined Footprint: One of the major challenges faced by the Martin Concrete team was the limited space available for concrete pouring. As the insulated metal panel (IMP) walls were being erected alongside the pouring of Slab on Grade (SOG), there was minimal room to maneuver equipment. To mitigate this issue, the team strategically utilized concrete pumps for nearly all of their pours and smaller equipment. This allowed the team to pour concrete efficiently without obstructing the installation of IMP walls, maintaining a steady workflow despite the confined work area.

- Precision in Slab on Grade (SOG) Pours: The SOG pours presented a complex challenge due to the need for multiple floor tolerances and specific slopes for proper drainage. Martin Concrete dedicated significant effort to ensuring that the slabs not only met aesthetic standards but also complied with complex drainage requirements.
- Frequent Drawing Changes: The project’s complexity was furthered by frequent changes to the construction drawings. To ensure that no revisions were overlooked, Martin Concrete maintained an adaptive and proactive approach to the project. Regularly reviewing updated plans and adjusting accordingly to ensure that the construction of the project progressed smoothly meeting the clients schedule.
